This study article, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, introduces the Joint Action PreventNCD, a large-scale EU initiative co-funded under the EU4Health programme. With 25 countries and more than 100 partners involved, the project aims to strengthen Europe’s capacity to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases.
The paper outlines the project’s objectives: to reduce social inequalities, improve monitoring systems, scale up evidence-based health promotion practices, and implement effective intersectoral policies across Europe. It highlights the six technical work streams—health in all policies, social inequalities, monitoring, regulation and taxation, healthy living environments, and identification of individuals at risk—supported by communication, evaluation, and sustainability actions.
By addressing structural determinants, piloting innovative approaches, and fostering collaboration among Member States, PreventNCD seeks to create long-term mechanisms for sustainable NCD prevention. The article emphasizes the importance of cross-sectoral policy, equity, and resilience in tackling Europe’s major health challenges.
